where e, e label the helicity states and k is the momentum transfer. In a naive wave function picture G1(0) can be interpreted as the fraction of the nucleon spin carried by the quarks. Experimental determinations lead to an unexpectedly small value of G1(0), calling for a theoretical explanation in the context of a nonperturbative study in QCD. G1(0) can be extracted from the nucleon matrix el...

Inspired by factorized scattering from delta–type impurities in (1+1)-dimensional space-time, we propose and analyse a generalization of the Zamolodchikov–Faddeev algebra. Distinguished elements of the new algebra, called reflection and transmission generators, encode the particle–impurity interactions. We describe in detail the underlying algebraic structure. The relative Fock representations ...

On the Beta Function in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

We re–examine perturbative and nonperturbative aspects of the beta function in N = 1 and N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories, make comments on the recent literature on the subject and discuss the exactness of several known results such as the NSVZ beta function. GEF-TH 2/99 IFUP-TH 10/99

We report new results from our finite size scaling analysis of 4d compact pure U(1) gauge theory with Wilson action. Investigating several cumulants of the plaquette energy within the Borgs-Kotecky finite size scaling scheme we find strong evidence for a first-order phase transition and present a high precision value for the critical coupling, βT in the thermodynamic limit.

Finite Temperature Quantum Field Theory with Impurities

We apply the concept of reflection-transmission (RT) algebra, originally developed in the context of integrable systems in 1+1 space-time dimensions, to the study of finite temperature quantum field theory with impurities in higher dimensions. We consider a scalar field in (s + 1) + 1 space-time dimensions, interacting with impurities localized on s-dimensional hyperplanes, but without self-int...
